Wow. Just wow. This hilarious, intricate, playful masterpiece of Tween fiction just blew me away. Samantha Spinner and the Super-Secret Plans DELIVERS. And it does so above and beyond any expectation I had when I preordered it more or less blind on the recommendation of a school librarian friend.
First off, man, the plot is something else. It's a save the world mystery adventure, but that doesn't even begin to describe the crazy madcap (yes, I just wrote madcap) twists and turns. Magic Treehouse meets I Love Lucy? Monty Python meets Encyclopedia Brown? I'm doing a bad job here.
Russell Ginns apparently has some sort of background in game design, puzzles etc. and it sure does show. There is just so much going on in this book. The plot itself revolves around the hero (Samantha Spinner, one of the coolest female leads I've read in a LONG time more on this later) solving weird funny puzzles and mysteries using weird, funny clues, her considerable intelligence and weird, funny wits, and a little help from her weird, funny siblings.
It's all positive, heathy stuff, but never feels smarmy or preachy. I fell like a lot of tween literature kind of has a padded tricycle helmet feel -- taking so much care not to upset, offend, making sure to be "PC" enough to be read in school libraries with no risk and no "edge". Samantha Spinner never crosses the line, never even acknowledges the line -- the book and the characters in it live in this totally other universe where kindness intelligence and tolerance aren't just ladled over the characters, they are built in carefully and naturally enough that you never feel manipulated or bullied into being good.
And the girl thing. We seem, at long last, to be moving into a place where women and girls refuse to stand in the shadows any more. I'm so happy that my daughter and nieces will grow up in a world where, although there is still a lot of work left to do, the pendulum is finally swinging in the direction. The Wonder Woman movie was great. I'm super psyched for the upcoming "Wrinkle In Time" movie. And although it's early days, I think this book, "Samantha Spinner and the Super Secret Plans" could be another touchstone. Samantha is a strong, strong character, smart, tough, persistent and absolutely totally likeable. What girl wouldnt want to see herself as Samantha. What BOY wouldn't? Yeah I gonna say it, this book could accomplish the elusive "Boy reads Girl" feat. VERRRY rare.
FInally, the prose, for want of a better word, scans. You can read it out loud without stumbling over my own tongue. Sound like a simple thing, you read it, you say it. But I've read so many mediocre books to my kids over the years that I could read fluently,. but I just couldn't SAY the words very fluently. Something about how the sentences were constructed. A minor point, I guess, but I loved reading out loud to my kids night after night, and a book that scans this well makes all the difference.
(Another series that I could read out loud thoughtlessly, smoothly was Charlie Higson's "Young Bond series".

Anyhow, this is a review of Samantha Spinner, not Young Bond. Just saying. Although Samantha Spinner couldn't be more different than James Bond, they do share prose that is carefully enough put together so as to be easily, fluently, fluidly readable.
This is Russell Ginns' first effort -- amazing to consider, and somewhat daunting to think how high he has set the bar. I think there will be a sequel. I hope so anyhow.

Samantha Spinner and the SuperSecret Plans Russell Ginns Barbara Fisinger 9781524720001 Books Reviews
My daughters declared to me a few days ago that Sam is the smartest and coolest character in young adult fiction, so I felt compelled to pick up "Super Secret Plans" after they had both torn through it...and I have to agree. Ginns has crafted a book that's hilarious, intelligent, affirming and delightfully unpredictable, and, like my girls, I didn't want to put it down. Our family can't wait to read Sam's next adventure!
This is a creative and delightful tale! Most enjoyable!
So fun to read with creative twists and great humor. My daughter loved it. It is also one of those rare books (like some other books, films, and tv shows) that is fun not just for the middle schooler, but also a great read for a parent or a kid-at-heart of any age. I could really see recommending this to kids of any age.
OMG this is everything you want in a kids adventure book! It’s fun it’s witty, it’s written UP to kids not down, like so much of the tired dreck out there, it sneaks some fun facts, it has a sense of wonder like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and creates a universal the way the Harry Potter series did. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I haven’t read any other books by the author, and I can’t find any but there is a new voice in children’s literature. Russell Ginns, are you out there? Your book is AWESOME!!! When is the next book coming?
Samantha and her brother, Nipper, have a quirky uncle who has gone missing. Oddly enough, he left some presents. Nipper is given the deed of the New York Yankees. The older sister receives 2.4 billion dollars. But to Samantha, he has given a rusty old umbrella. It doesn't seem fair...until Samantha discovers the super-secret plans. What happens next is a big adventure which leads them around the world where they have to watch out for the RAIN.
Samantha Spinner and the Super-Secret plans is a fast-paced read in which the protagonists bounce all over the world. In the process, the reader learns a few foreign words, some historical trivia, and a bit about the country they visit. The potty humor and grossness of some of the characters will appeal to pre-teens who like that stuff. As a clever bonus, there are some puzzles to solve. Answers are in the back. This is a fun book for early middle grade readers. Sherry Ellis, author of Bubba and Squirt's Big Dig to China
What a wonderful book! Just delightful. I bought it for my niece and nephew, but dipped into it to see what it was like. By the time I dipped out, I had finished the book! (Fortunately, they didn't seem to mind getting a slightly used copy, and love it just as much.) It's funny, fast, smart, and endlessly inventive. With a healthy dose of silly, for sure. This book doesn't just celebrate knowing and puzzling things out, it leaves readers a bit more worldly and knowledgeable when they're done. But mainly, it's one of those books that makes reading joyful, which is really the thing. Our only complaint so far--when can we get more Samantha Spinner?!
Samantha Spinner is a spectacular addition to the world of young adult fiction!
From the image of the Eiffel Tower on the first page, my daughter was hooked. She devoured the book, and now that I've read it myself, I understand why. Russell Ginns has produced a page turner that rises above the young adult cliches. Rather than insult the reader's intelligence with predictable tropes or romantic stereotypes like so many young adult series, this book is thoughtful, clever, and frankly hilarious. We hope to see more in the series.
