I appreciated this book most because the teenage protagonists were believable. Too often, adolescent heros are precocious and annoying, which makes me not want to hear about anything they are involved in--instead, I just want to give them a well-deserved slap. This time, the teenage boy was, although obviously a "good kid," also realistic. I was impressed that his girlfriend was a strong, independent, capable character as well. I didn't see the big reveal coming at all, which was also refreshing. The author also wasn't afraid to kill off some major characters...so don't go into this thinking that everyone will be safe! All in all, it was a good, quick read that will entertain you without bathing you in blood and gore.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It quickly grabbed my interest and remained suspenseful throughout. The book is an easy read and a great choice for a cold winter day.
Very well written, as the reader you get captured by the characters and story line. It really has it all, romance, intrigue, murder, mystery, etc.....

I liked the characters a lot and boy was there a surprise. The writing was good and the story has a good flow.
I'm usually wary of authors' first novels, but this one was a very pleasant surprise. While there were a couple of first-timer mistakes, the believability of the characters and the plot twist more than made up for them. Having read other of this author's books, I now know that a strong central female character is common in Mr Chambers's works. I enjoyed the "no character is safe" feeling, and, though I was pretty sure I had figured out the plot twist, I could never be certain, until the reveal. With practice, Mr. Chambers's novels will be on par with the greats, like King & Koontz, in short order.
What better way to remember how much I missed my childhood love for reading than to find a book that invites me to lose myself so effortlessly in the lives of it's characters? Smiling Jack was exactly this type of book with an authentic teenage romance, 20-year-old, unsolved murder mystery, diverse characters and enough gritty plot to keep me guessing. I truly enjoyed getting to know T.J.'s mother, as her interaction with her sons flowed so naturally and with such familiarity to that of my relationships with my own two sons. This book, read by lantern light, was a delicious treat each evening of my recent camping trip. I have also read Sisters and Bad Girls, written by Michael Chambers, and I enjoy his writing style tremendously!
