Wake A Watersong Novel Book 1 eBook Amanda Hocking

First off I have absolutely fallen in love with Amanda Hocking's writing. I've only read her Hollows books before this one but I just love the way she can write a fast paced and well rounded story. As a warning I will try to keep this review spoiler free but something minor might slip in so you've been warned.

At first I was a bit disappointed that the story is split up between Gemma and her sister Harper as I felt Gemma was the more interesting character but Harper quickly grew on me and by the end I was looking forward to her parts of the story. I've been very excited to see mermaids making a comeback in YA recently and Wake takes that a bit farther working in the Greek mythology and making this story unique. This book mainly serves as a set up for the rest of the series but I really loved this story and it definitely left me wanting more.

The only problems I had with this book were the occasional grammatical errors which I felt were too many for a professionally published book but really that was it. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes to read paranormal romance or anything involving Greek mythology and mermaids.

Wake A Watersong Novel Book 1 eBook Amanda Hocking Reviews

I find myself struggling to rate this book. I'd give it four stars for some pretty terrific storytelling for the YA genre, but perhaps only two stars for the author's ability to fully develop her characters and cause the reader to care very much about them. The text could have been edited a bit better. The dialog was believable, but sections dragged at times. There were also at least a couple dozen swear words in the novel, which I didn't feel were necessary or desirable. For these reasons, I find myself smack in the middle with a rating of three stars for Wake.
The story is intriguing, and I found the two protagonists likable enough, although not fully developed. I enjoyed reading the story from the point of view of two sisters with different agendas. Both have been damaged by family tragedy, and both are coming to terms with serious changes in their lives (first real boyfriend, getting ready for college, etc.) I also applaud the author for including a character who has been brain-damaged and is struggling to live out her life under trying circumstances. This adds layers to the story and makes the novel much more interesting.
After finishing Wake today, I went online to research and refresh my memory about mermaids and sirens, and I was a bit disconcerted to find that the two are not the same at all, although they share some similarities. Perhaps it doesn't matter? To me, it did. I like reading books by authors who diligently research their subjects (even if they are fantastical creatures used in a fantasy) and stick to the accepted mythology. But that's just me. Another reason for three stars instead of four.
The real strength of this book is in the storytelling. YA readers and adults who read YA will certainly enjoy reading Wake; it's a light, entertaining book and great for a summer weekend on the beach.
Sharilyn Miller, author of the Arty Jewelry series
Something evil has come to the town of Capri.

First there were the missing boys. And now something has happened to Gemma Fisher.

Something that changed her. Something that made her more powerful, more alluring... hungry.

She knew she shouldn't have trusted those girls. But it was almost as if she couldn't resist. There was just something about them.

And now she has a choice to make. A choice that really isn't a choice. Because no matter what she chooses to do, there will be a price. It's only a matter of who will have to pay it.

***

Wake is an imaginative, captivating and delightful first book in author Amanda Hocking's Watersong series. With a few unexpected twists, dark secrets and grisly discoveries, and an opening that hints at all that is to come, this story will immediately engage and entertain.

Combining fantasy and myth, Wake introduces readers to Gemma Fisher, a girl who is confident, beautiful and determined. A girl who loves being in the water more than anything. A girl who is driven and focused on making her dream of swimming at the Olympics a reality. A girl who isn't about to let anything stand in her way of her dreams. Until, that one night that changes everything.

Wake sets the stage for this series, gives readers a bit of a mystery to solve, puts a character in an incredibly difficult predicament and leaves things wide open for the next book. And it gives them just a taste of some of the darker elements that are sure to come.

This story is told from Gemma and her sister Harper's perspectives. Both are strong female main characters with very different personalities who lead very different lives. So, having this dual perspective gives readers a rather interesting look at the events as they unfold. But it does at times become a bit confusing when the perspective switches back and forth too rapidly.

In Wake readers will learn what happens to Gemma after her encounter with the three terrifying but stunningly beautiful girls that have come to the town of Capri. They'll find out just what sacrifice's she'll have to make. And they'll learn whether love will be strong enough to overcome the lure of something darker, more powerful and far more deadly.

Amanda Hocking has once again written a story that is awash with her creativity and inventiveness. She has taken a tale that has been told and brought her unique style to it. She has created characters that are easy to relate to. And she's mixed in both a sweet simplicity and a dark complexity that makes this story interesting and will make readers eager for the next installment.

And with its quick pace, easy flow and not one but two budding romances, Wake will appeal to readers who are fans of mermaid stories with a bit of a darker feel, fans of the author and readers just looking for a fast, fun and engaging story.
