How We Fall Kate Brauning Books Reviews
An amazing book!
A well written book with intrigue and mystery. It grabbed me from the beginning.
This story hooks you and doesn't let go. It’s a taboo subject, but the characters are so compelling, and their struggle is so well-written, that you find yourself rooting for Jackie and Marcus. Beyond the forbidden love theme, the story explores family dynamics and friendship. I loved a lot of the quirks of the secondary characters, and the backdrop of a hot summer in small-town Midwest was the perfect setting.
The unsolved crime aspect of the novel is what truly makes it a page-turner – you are trying to connect the dots and figure out who the killer is right along with Jackie. The super suspenseful ending kept me guessing, and I could not put it down!
Overall, this was a great read. I’m looking forward to more books by Kate Brauning!
I adore this book. It's a fast-paced ride from start to finish with heart-pounding suspense and romance. If you're looking for a YA contemporary with kickass kissing scenes and devastating one-liners, HOW WE FALL's got you covered.
My favorite character was Will, the smart-talking charmer, but I was really surprised by how much I liked Jackie. It's never easy choosing to be different, and Brauning portrays Jackie's struggle with her taboo relationship with Marcus realistically. The characters are smart even in their tragedy Jackie and Marcus know there's no way for them to be together without their small town eventually finding them out. Being in Jackie's head is a treat-- from the classic film references to her genuine affection for her family and Marcus, she's someone I'd follow through heartbreak and into danger any day of the week.
Don't start this without a few hours to spare-- you're going to keep turning pages until it's done.
Great debut. I enjoy reading about taboo relationships because it says a lot about an author's talent when she can make you believe in a romance (in HOW WE FALL, it's between first cousins) frowned upon by most of society. Plus, I love having my heart broken.
I found the relationships and family drama far more compelling than the mystery, but the writing was great and I adored all the references to classic films.
First, I hate reading spoilers in reviews, so I promise there will be none in mine.
How We Fall is one of those books I fell in love with from the beginning. Throughout most of the book, the mystery takes a backseat to the romance, and I was totally okay with that.
Writing a story about first cousins falling in love can be tricky to say the least. Marcus and Jackie are the perfect example of two people, who should NOT fall in love, but Kate has a way with words and by the end of the third chapter, I didn’t care who they were, I wanted them to be together.
Besides the love story you have a mystery weaved in. Her friend Ellie who had moved away the previous year is missing. Jackie struggles not only with her guilt of not keeping in touch, but the uncertainty of what happened to her friend all while trying to keep her secret relationship with her cousin hidden from family and friends. The conflict was so high it seeped from the book and straight into my chest. My body tensed, as I read, desperate to know what would happen next.
Any book that causes so many emotions is a must-read in my opinion.
In conclusion, there is nothing not to love about this book. Small town crime, strange things happening around town, taboo love, jealousy, and beautifully executed prose. I was sad to see this book end. So yes, I recommend this book, and I will most definitely be telling everyone I know to pick up a copy. I was left thinking about these characters far after I finished reading, and I desperately wanted to know more about Marcus and Jackie and what happened after the last page ended. It has been awhile since I’ve read a book I loved this much.
The premise of the book intrigued me, as well as the Midwest location. I received the book and finished it the next day, I just could not put it down. Kate Brauning does an excellent job escalating the romantic tension alongside the mystery that is threaded through the story. Her exposition is graceful and draws you into the way her characters view themselves and their world. I strongly recommend this book, both for young adult and adult readers.
This book is absolutely incredible! This book banters back and forth perfectly between a love story and a murder mystery. This book brings you out of your comfort zone with two cousins in love, but by the first 100 pages you'll be wondering why you ever questioned Jackie and Marcus' unique relationship in the first place. This is a must read for not only teenagers but adults too because it makes you question right and wrong and where the line falls in these situations. Like I said... A must read for all!!
Loved the intensity of the romance in this one. Such a great conflict, and a quirky cast of characters.
